Breast cancer awareness
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Cancer is one of those diseases that gains a hold in most everyone’s lives. It’s a tragic part of our existence that we are faced with this horrible disease that affects so many of our loved ones. I lost my mother to cancer when I was 14. One of my closest friends from high school was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer last year (and is kicking but in Chemo right now), my mother-in-law is a survivor; it’s prevalent.
As women, it’s up to us to advocate for ourselves. We need to find doctors that will support us in receiving the treatment we need. Back in the 1970s my Mom went in to get checked and the doctors told her to go home; a woman in her thirties couldn’t possibly have cancer. She died when she was 48. My friend diagnosed last year had to fight like hell to be checked because she KNEW something was wrong but the doctors gave up looking. She finally found the right person and they found the tumor.
This is your reminder to schedule the mammograms and MRI’s. Do self-checks every month. Be your biggest warrior. We are all so busy right now. We have kids at school (likely on-line) and a million other things to do. The last place I want to be is a doctor’s office but if we don’t take care of ourselves first we can’t take care of those we love. Get your girls checked!
